This is a listing of rare or new items which are not included in our paper lists. This can be because they are
 ● newly-stocked,
 ● newly-lifted,
 ● available in numbers too small to allow us to put them in our paper lists.

There is no need to check if we still have them - they are only available online and the shop counts the sales and numbers available. If they are listed here, they are in stock.

Once they are gone, they are gone!

Albuca hereroense

Albuca hereroense

A beautiful species from Namibia with quite remarkable, succulent, upright, cylindrical, bright green leaves and flower stems which can range from 20 to 25cm tall. The stem bears several, well-spaced flowers which point downwards. These are of a rich yellow with a crystalline texture and are subtended by grey sepals. The blooms are very sweetly fragrant particularly in the afternoon.

This is a rare plant both in cultivation and in the wild. These are seed raised from the most robust form that is known and which occurs on quartzite outcrops in the Rehoboth district south of Windhoek in Namibia.

It needs good sharp drainage and a sparing hand with the watering can, under frost free glass. First offered by us in March 2010, I am not aware of this ever having been offered before, anywhere.

Allium alexeianum

Allium alexeianum

A central Asian species named by Regel as long ago as 1875 from Turkmenistan where it was said to have been found at between 3,000 and 11,000 feet altitude. It is now known to range throughout the Pamir mountain systems.

This has attractive, long, ovate blue-green leaves margined with red springing from small, white-coated bulbs. The flower stems are short, seldom more than 7-10cm tall in good light and carry an inverted conical to rounded umbel of broadly funnel-shaped, bright red-pink flowers which are held on stiff, bright red-purple pedicels of unequal length.

A decorative little species, perfect in a pot or under alpine glass though it is happy also outside, as long as provided with a fertile, loam-based soil, good drainage and a dryish summer rest.

Allium caesium (aff)

ex Afghanistan Allium caesium (aff)

A new plant for us introduced in 2006, but as yet not 100% identified. At the 'worst' it will be a superb, strong form of caesium, hence our tentative name.

It makes a good sized, well-packed ball-head of superb, deep but bright, blue flowers on a 40cm tall stem in June.

Originally found in Afghanistan, hence our knowledge is scanty, but a superb garden plant. Readily grown in a well-drained, sunny loam, dry in the summer when it is dormant.

Ammocharis coranica Legonyane form

Ammocharis coranica Legonyane form

A lovely form and one of our most popular, when it is available. This makes large bulbs which, when mature, can carry two, or even three flowering stems each.

In turn each of the short stems holds a globe of tubular flowers of rich pink, which darken further soon after opening, but then hold their condition for a good time, slowly reflexing along the length of their petals.

This is a very vigorous strain raised from material originally traceable to Acacia scrub around Legonyane in the N. W. Province of S. Africa.

Anemone baissunensis Hissar

Anemone baissunensis Hissar

Highly decorative foliage in which the leaves are divided into three and then each division is further dissected.

The flowers are amongst the largest of the central Asian group, usually 3-3.5cm across, but exceptionally 6cm. They are a bright vivid yellow. The centre can vary from yellow to purple-black. This is, in effect, a yellow version of bucharica.

Cultivated stock traceable to material originally from the Vakhsh valley in Hissar mountains of Tajikistan. Sunny open site with a dry summer rest.

Anemone gortschakowii

Anemone gortschakowii

This is a small species in all of its parts. It has small, multi-divided leaves which sit at ground level, below the beautiful, long-stemmed 2cm flower.

This is a stunning and rich acid yellow with a central boss composed of yellow anthers circling the yellow (or very rarely black), styles.

A distinct and lovely species. Our original stock is traceable to the Mogol Tau in Tajikistan.

Anemone nemorosa Bohemia

Anemone nemorosa Bohemia

This is a new cultivar in which the flowers are semi-double with approximately twice the usual number of petals, 14-16 as a rule.

The blooms are of such a pale pink, that they only look pink when actually compared to a white flower!

A very lovely new form introduced in the last few years, from the Czech Republic where it was originally found in the wild, many years ago.

Anemone petiolulosa

Anemone petiolulosa

This remains little known in cultivation. Bright lemon-yellow 2cm flowers held on stiff stems above the bright sage green foliage. These leaves are divided into three but then further subdivided to give a very ornamental foil to the vividly coloured blooms.

These have pointed, slightly folded, petals different in shape to the other species listed and they are sometimes be backed with a reddish tone. The centre is a yellow boss of anthers and styles sometimes with a blackish central stain.

Originally from the Kizil Kum, Uzbekistan.

Anemone tschernjaewi Chulbair

Anemone tschernjaewi Chulbair

The flowers of this glorious species vary from the normal white, through pale pink to a delicate light violet. All hues are so pale as to all be classed as white. The flower colour is superbly enhanced by the central boss of contrasting raspberry pink. The leaves are mid green and are hardly divided.

Spread from Afghanistan to Kashmir, but in these troubled times you may prefer our nursery-raised plants. The stock is traceable to the Chulbair Mountains of Tadjikistan, the home of such plants as 1ris parvula and Tu1ipa galore.

Anemone verae

Anemone verae

This is a name that we can hardly trace, but the species is a soft yellow plant of the bucharica alliance. It has a red-tinged exterior, especially noticeable when the plant is in bud.

The Ukrainian paper describing the plant was obtained through the kindness of a Czech colleague who got it for us from Slovakia. The plants came from Poland via a different Czech colleague -see what we go through to bring you new plants!

Well drained, loam based compost in sun, or potted. Cultivated stock, traceable to the Darwas range in Tajikistan.

Anemone veraeaneverver £9.00

Anemone verae x baissunensis

Anemone verae x baissunensis

Originally a natural hybrid, formed by the introgression of two populations into one other.

The offspring have inherited the pointed petals and slightly cup-shaped flowers of verae along with its 'hint of red' tinge, on the petal exterior.

To this has been added features from baissunensis such as the broader bases to the petals and some of the silver-filgree markings on the broader foliage. The slightly broader leaves (there is not a lot in it!) combined with hybrid vigour makes this a very good grower as well as a lovely plant.

Arisaema amurense

Arisaema amurense

A superb garden species from Manchuria with tri-part, crisped edge leaves and an emerald green spathe broadly lined with white.

Readily grown in almost any garden soil, best in humus enriched loam in light shade, but tolerant. One of the most northerly species and thus very hardy.

Arisaema amurenseariamuamu £9.50

Arisaema dilatatum

Arisaema dilatatum

Stout spathes of translucent glistening, crystalline white are strongly striped with sharply contrasted deep purple-brown.

The spadix is glossy, bright emerald green. It is thin at the very base, abruptly dilates to become very fat, then tapers and bends horizontally before turning upwards again to describe a perfect "S" shaped curve. It really needs to be seen to appreciate its beauty.

This is an Arisaema that would catch the eye of any gardener. You might have gathered that I like it. It grows delightfully easily in a damp. humus rich, well drained soil in sun or light shade.

As this is often available as imported tubers, can I stress that these are large, very large in fact, cultivated, propagated tubers, grown and produced in the UK and freshly lifted.
