Crinum

Crinum

A widespread genus ranging across all hemispheres. We offer South African and Madagascan species, mostly arid-land species. These are NOT hardy garden species, they are totally different needing glasshouse cultivation in northern climes.

Most of ours are rare, little-known plants and have only recently become available. Without exception they are superb!

They are not difficult but they need a sharply drained soil. These are not suitable for cultivation outside in the UK no matter how mild or south-facing the site. As with many arid-land plants, flowering is controlled more by water availability than season and as such the flowrting period is in th ehands of the cultivator, as a guide, most flower with us in summer or late summer.

Ours are grown in 30cm deep beds of sandy soil with little else added. They grow at a minumum of 40ºF in the winter, with powered air-circulation. This is a spartan regime, and they may well do better under more fertile conditions, however it seems to suit them well under our care!

Crinum lugardiae

Crinum lugardiae

Veld Lily

A rare species from seasonally wet river banks and flood plains from South Africa to Botswana. Though widely scattered it is rarely seen.

It grows from bulbs which are naturally smaller than many other Crinum - some 5cm or so across, although these produce flowers 8cm across and 12-15cm long. These lovely flowers are usually soft pink, with a deeper, pink-purple, midrib. The anthers are deep purple-black but ripen to cream pollen.

This is a summer-flowering species which does well in pots under glass where it dwarf nature combined with comparatively large flowers, can be appreciated. Well drained, loam-based compost with good feeding and winter dormancy when it is essential that the plants do not freeze.
