Eranthis

Eranthis

Often know as 'Winter Aconites' these like damp leafy soils in light shade. They are tolerant plants in the garden and will thrive in peaty or limey soils, as long as they have water, light shade and good drainage.

The fertile, more vigorous species such as hyemalis and cilicica are ideal for naturalising and semi-wild gardening. The infertile Guinea Gold is sufficiently vigorous that it will virtually naturalise when happy.

Like many Ranunculaceae they dislike being moved too much and detest being dried out and desiccated. Tubers may sulk for an entire season, making no above ground growth, or dying back quickly, while they establish a root system. They usually come up full of vigour the following year as long as they have not be damaged by an exploratory finger checking their welfare! These are plump, nursery-propagated top-sized corms, propagated in cultivation, they are not tiny, dried, wild-collected 'mummies', such as you will see in garden centres and supermarkets.

Eranthis hyemalis Flora Plena

Eranthis hyemalis Flora Plena

Lovely ruffled, double flowers of green and bright yellow above bright green leaves, early in the spring.

A great rarity but one which sets no seed so that we seldom have more than a very few, true, vegetative propagations, and this is only after many years work.

A PS:- We have now observed that this stock can throw some single flowers. If this happens (it does not always) then it happens after transplanting, when in an unsuitable spot, or when stressed. If left undisturbed the plants throw double again next year. We have rogued the stock of all singles (only to have these singles revert to doubles again) but if it distresses you, then you can return the plants to us, but keeping them, will usually cure the problem.

Eranthis hyemalis Grunling

This translates as Greenfinch (the bird) and has yellow petals striped on the exterior, along their length with irregular lime-green bands.

Very distinctive and appealing and different from anything in the UK so far.

Eranthis hyemalis Schwefelglanz

Eranthis hyemalis Schwefelglanz

A bright golden yellow E. hyemalis form from Germany. We think that this translates either as Sulphur glory or Sulphur Brilliance. It is said to come true from seed.

A very worthwhile form, totally distinct with flowers of a paler colouring, inclining towards a slightly pastel, sulphur-yellow rather than the acid lemon yellow of the normal form. The colouring is superb, you really need to see it, of course, to appreciate how different it is from the normal form. This having been said it makes a marvellous companion plant for the normal form. A truly distinct variant still new are uncommon in UK gardens, First offered 2010.

Eranthis tubergenii

Eranthis tubergenii

This is a cross between E. cilicica and E. hyemalis of horticultural origins. It is NOT Guinea Gold and is not entitled to that name, but could perhaps do with one of its own as it is an excellent plant which needs distinguishing.

Makes a very good display with large slightly fragrant, lemon-peel yellow flowers, fully a week earlier than Guinea Gold. Ordinary garden conditions.

Eranthis tubergenii Guinea Gold

Eranthis tubergenii Guinea Gold

This is a true stock traceable to the raiser Mr. J.M.C. Hoog. Selected from the progeny of a cross between Eranthis cilicica and Eranthis hyemalis this has the merits of both parents with the growability of a hybrid.

The largest of the Aconites with great big, golden-yellow glossy flowers over strongly bronze-tinged, divided leaf ruffs from Jan-Mar.

There are several impostors bearing this name in the trade. We offer what is, beyond any doubt, the true CLONE, vegetatively propagated from our own stock. The true plant is seed sterile, if yours is not, then it is not GG!
